The annual Giving USA report was released last week through the collaborative efforts of the Giving USA Foundation, The Giving Institute, and the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. This well-known publication is used by many professionals and organizations as the benchmark for philanthropic health in the US.
The report summarizes data for a given year, and then compares it to the previous year's from a number of angles:
- By source: Individuals, Foundations, Corporations, and Bequests
- By recipient: Religion, Education, Human services, Arts, etc
- By current dollars
- By inflation-adjusted dollars
- By percentage of Gross Domestic Product
The report also makes observations about trends in giving and discusses key factors related to those trends.
The overall news is good. Despite a drop in the corporate giving category, total giving was up 3%, continuing a trend of increase for the fourth consecutive year.
