Another #GivingTuesday has come and gone, and the results of this year’s day of giving were phenomenal. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this holiday, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving and is celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, providing a chance to give back after two busy days of consumerism (Black Friday and Cyber Monday).
Since its inception in 2012, each year has seen substantial increases in philanthropic activity. In fact, as of Nov. 30, #GivingTuesday 2016 experienced double-digit growth yet again!
Here are the numbers, according to Kivi Leroux Miller’s Nonprofit Communications Blog:
- 2,399,092 social media engagements
- $168 million raised online
- 56 million gifts
- $107.69 was the average gift size
- 98 participating countries and territories
GlobalGiving, a nonprofit that connects donors with grassroots projects around the world, reported that “#GivingTuesday 2016 was the highest-volume fundraising day in the nonprofit’s 14-year history.” This year, GlobalGiving offered a #MatchAMillion campaign from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. They gave $500,000 in matched gifts that were applied at a 50 percent match.
